Choosing Organic Foods

Posted By Derrick Walker on August 12, 2008

How many times have you thought “organic foods are too expensive; I can’t afford to go organic”? Or maybe you feel it is just too difficult to wade through all the statistics and information on choosing organic foods and the reasons for preferring it over conventionally grown foods. Organic foods are good for you because they are free of many added chemicals and hormones that conventionally grown foods receive as part of the growth cycle. However, it can add up at the cash register to try and keep yourself healthier by eating organic foods. To help you make your decisions in an informed way, here are some simple tips to identify the best choices and stay within budget.

Steps

  1. Understand why organic foods should be an important part of your diet. Organic foods are grown with no or fewer chemical or hormonal additives in their growth cycle than conventionally grown produce and meat. This means that laws on organic labelling in many places ban the use of a wide array of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, hormone treatments, antiobiotics etc. on any produce or meat destined to carry an organic certification.
  2. Choose the crucial dozen organic foods. The dozen foods listed next are considered to be the foods most vulnerable to the addition of too many pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics etc. This top dozen lists food items where home washing and cooking practices are unlikely to result in reduction of the chemical or hormonal residues:
    • Beef, chicken and pork
    • Dairy products: Milk, cheese and butter
    • Strawberries, raspberries and cherries
    • Apples and pears
    • Tomatoes
    • Spinach and salad greens
    • Coffee
    • Potatoes
    • Stone fruits: Peaches, nectarines and apricots
    • Grapes
    • Celery
    • Peppers (capsicums), green and red
  3. Shop for seasonal foods. Seasonally available produce is the budget-conscious shopper’s prize. Produce in season is always value for money because it is plentiful and this includes organic produce. In addition, seasonal food often travels less distance as it is grown locally and therefore will keep in better condition (more nutrients), for longer. From a comfort perspective, there is something very calming and traditional about eating the way our ancestors have for millennia; you become attuned to the cycle of the seasons. An added bonus: You are less inclined to overfill your fridge with food that ends up going unnoticed, which saves you money.
  4. Eat in moderation. The statistics on obesity continue to rise. We do not need huge quantities of food; too much food makes our bodies sick rather than healthy and happy. While eating in moderation means eating less food overall, it most certainly does not mean going without and feeling hungry. Change to eating more energy-sustaining foods, such as organic grains andto bulk out your diet. You will not need to eat as much of these foods, as unlike processed foods, you will feel full faster and for longer. Your budget will go further simply through choosing prime quality organic foods in smaller amounts. Most importantly, eating in moderation will result in less intake of chemical and hormonal residues and that can only be a good outcome for everyone.
  5. Eat variety. Variety means including all those vegetables and not just living off potatoes. The more that you vary your diet within seasonal constraints, there is a higher likelihood that you will have less exposure to a build-up of one type of chemical residues. Variety also means an interesting and fulfilling diet, as well as a greater likelihood that you will get all the nutrients, anti-oxidants and fibre that you need to keep healthy.
  6. Be realistic. Most nutritionists would still prefer that you eat fruit and vegetables whether they are organic or conventional in origin in preference to highly processed foods. Use the list set out in step 2 to pick the organic foods and then purchase conventional foods for the remainder if you have a tight budget. Taking the simple step of choosing some organics to include in your diet is an important one of taking control over what is potentially affecting your health; whilstyou will still be surrounded by the chemical load of our industrial age, you are taking positive action to help yourself and to encourage organic growers at the same time.

Tips

  • The “harm” discussed in this article that may arise from eating conventionally grown foods is theoretical. It is possible, but not certain, that pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals or additives may build up over time, particularly in body fat, and result in health problems.
  • Be aware that, depending on the jurisdiction in which your foods have been grown, small amounts of certain types of chemicals may have been used on organic produce. In general, if such chemicals have been certified as allowed for use in the organic sector, they ought to be ones considered to safe for human consumption as a result of scientific testing and observations over a very long period of time and to come with a high level of certainty as to their negligible impacts on human beings. If this bothers you still, do your research to find out just what “organic” labels permit in your part of the world. Some organic producers use natural products that they deem safe, but that have not been tested scientifically. Also organic producers may fertilize their crops with animal manures which have not been properly composted. These foods pose a risk for pathogens that can cause serious illness.
  • Try to reduce the amounts of processed foods in your diet. You get less nutritional benefits from processed foods, organic or not. *If you really enjoy that cake laden with sugar (yes it is very processed), have it once a month rather than everyday. Then it becomes a blissful treat rather than something taken for granted.
  • Always wash vegetables and fruit well; some stores sell special detergents for this. Just because it is labeled organic doesn’t mean it is safe to eat without a wash; bacteria thrive under all conditions.

Warnings

  • Some jurisdictions may have more lax laws on what “organic” means. Always do your research first. Read labels carefully; some products try to be organic but contain very little in the way of organic components, such as breakfast cereals. The more processed an item, the more likely it is that you should read the label carefully.
  • Be wary of industry propaganda aimed at belittling organic efforts. There are some seriously bad side effects from many of the chemicals and hormones used in our food and where profits are at stake, there is also plenty to discourage you from making healthy choices for you and your family. Do your own research; don’t just take this article as gospel either. You are responsible for learning as much as you can about your health and how to protect it.
  • Do not confuse organic and natural. The two terms are different, although they may be used on the same item. Natural by itself means nothing; in most places it is an entirely unregulated term that means nothing other than what the manufacturer wants it to mean.

Your First Time Brazilian Bikini Wax

Posted By Derrick Walker on August 11, 2008

By Paton Jackson

First, you must be sure that you want to get a brazilian bikini wax. Consider trying first the standard bikini wax which will remove the hair from your bikini line or the full bikini which will remove most of your pubic hair apart from the most sensitive areas. A brazilian bikini wax removes ALL your pubic hair.

We advice you to get your first brazilian bikini wax by a professional. Many women who try to give themselves a brazilian bikini wax, cause damage and their bikini area looks worse after the brazilian wax.

You could find a salon that offers a brazilian bikini wax in any big US city. Just look in the “Yellow pages” or in any search engine for “brazilian wax” + “name of your city”.

After locating a salon, find out how many brazilian waxes they do a week? Make sure that the persons who are responsible for the brazilian bikini wax are experienced. Ask to talk to customers that got a brazilian bikini wax from the same salon.

Open your purse. A brazilian bikini wax may cost up to 100 US dollars. However, the average cost is about 50 bucks. We advice you pay not less than the average price to get a professional treatment.

Come to your scheduled treatment with a good mood after taking a warm shower cleaning your pubic area.
You will get into a separate room or a hole with a curtain. Then you will lie on a bed with your knees up or legs down.  Then, the therapist will trim down your pubic hair with scissors to a length of about a quarter inch.

Afterwards, the real thing will start. The waxer will start the waxing process. He will use a low temperature wax to cause less pain. When the wax cools he will pull it out with your pubic hair. This part is the most painful one. However, the first time is the most painful one. The hair can be pulled out easier in the following times.  The waxer will ask you to get into some weird uncomfortable positions – holding your legs up, to the side and even over your head.

If the waxer is a good one the painful part will end quickly. If you feel it takes too long or that the pain is unbearable, just tell the therapist that you need a little rest.  When the waxing is done a soothing lotion should be applied to the pubic area.  Your bikini area will stay smooth for at least 3 weeks with no maintenance at all. Make the most out of it.

Grown-up pigtails
These low, messy ponies keep hair off your face on a 90-degree day while still giving you a sexy, hair-down look. And we promise you won’t work up a sweat styling them. Just center-part your hair using your fingers (a comb would make it too neat) and secure each side into a pigtail at the nape of your neck, loosening some pieces above the elastics and finger-teasing the tails to add volume.

The Truth Behind Some Beauty Myths

Posted By Derrick Walker on August 4, 2008

 By Anna Lynn C. Sibal

Waxing Salt Lake City Utah - Waxing Gurus

Waxing Salt Lake City Utah - Waxing Gurus

When we were struggling through those awkward teenage years, when our hormones were wreaking havoc on our bodies and our skin, we were most likely inundated by advice from our mothers and grandmothers, and even our girlfriends, on what we should do to keep ourselves beautiful despite the storm of changes upon us and upon our bodies. Some of them sound sensible, while some sound totally absurd.

But even if these pieces of advice sound really silly, there are some of them that we could not easily shake off. They seem to work for us, and why let go of a good thing if it is working somewhat?

Nonetheless, for curiositys sake, sometimes there is a need to ask. Do the beauty practices handed down to us by our mothers, grandmothers and girlfriends that we have religiously observed through the years hold a grain of scientific truth in them, or are they merely beauty myths spun by old wives? Lets find out.

Beauty Myth #1: Plucking white hairs yields more white hairs.

This is definitely just a beauty myth. Our hair whitens as part of the natural process of aging, and some of us see our hair start turning white earlier than usual compared to others. It only seems to us that we are having more and more gray hair after we see our first strand of white because our mind is now trained to look for the grays in our mane, and so we are now more likely to notice.

Beauty Myth #2: Shaving the hair makes it grow back thicker.

This is definitely another beauty myth as well. Shaved hair seems to grow back thicker only because when we shave, the razor cuts the hair off only on the skins surface. They were not plucked off directly from the follicle. Therefore, when the hair grows back, the wide part of the strand grows out, making the hair appear thicker.

Beauty Myth #3: Mayonnaise makes for a great conditioner.

No, this one is not a myth. Mayonnaise, as long as it is real, does make for a great hair conditioner. The oil and eggs that can be found in real mayonnaise is rich in fatty acids and protein that nourishes the hair.

Beauty Myth #4: Applying ice to the skin makes the pores smaller.

Nothing can make the pores smaller. The size of our pores is the result of genetics, not of temperature applied on the skin, so some people just have smaller pores than others.

Beauty Myth #5: Toothpaste can cure pimples

Well, yes. Toothpaste has menthol and other active ingredients that can dry up a pimple and make it heal much quickly than if left alone. However, the same active ingredients in toothpaste that can heal a pimple can also dry up and irritate the skin of your face, so it is better to use a pimple cream rather than toothpaste for your pimple.

Beauty Myth #6: Applying beer on the skin before going for a sun tan results in a golden glow.

No, not true. In fact, you should avoid sun tanning altogether, unless you are going to use a self-tanner. Applying beer before going for a tan does not do anything for the skin. Some people are just prone to getting a golden tan, while others naturally turn red as a lobster under the sun. It is, again, a matter of genetics.

Beauty Myth #7: Crossing the legs leads to varicose veins.

Not really. The true causes of varicose veins are yet unknown, but again, some people are more prone to having them because of factors like heredity, age and weight. Crossing the legs will not cause you to have varicose veins, but if you already have them, it can make the condition worse.

Beauty Myth #8: Washing the feet when tired will make the veins swell.

The veins in the feet really swell when the feet are tired. It is the bodys own automatic attempt to soothe the tiredness of the feet. In fact, it is indeed best to soak the feet in warm water to further increase the blood circulation to your lower extremities, so as to take the tiredness away.

Easy Effective Tips to Moisturize Your Skin

Posted By Derrick Walker on August 4, 2008

By Kathryn M. D’Imperio

No matter what your age or skin type, it is vital to protect the skin you have. Avoid overly exposing your skin to the sun, wind, or harsh chemicals like chlorine. Practice a regular skincare routine by cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturizing your skin.
Follow these tips to keep your skin as healthy, smooth, and sexy as ever!

After a bath or shower, apply moisturizers to lock the moisture into your skin.

Alternate between oil-based and water-based moisturizers if you have combination skin.

Choose an oil-free, water-based moisturizer for oily skin.

Choose a thick, oil-based moisturizer for exceptionally dry skin.

Choose a gentle, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Do not apply moisturizers too often because it can result in clogged pores.

Focus on other body parts besides your face. Moisturizing is vital on dry elbows, knees, legs, breasts, and other areas that may be prone to flaking and chapping.

Its never too early to start moisturizing your skin and to protect it from the signs of aging.

Mature skin may benefit from moisturizing products that contain alpha-hydroxy acid, selenium, or Tropoelastin.

Pick a moisturizer that contains a low level of sunscreen, like SPF 15. It keeps your skin soft and smooth while preventing the negative effects of harmful UV rays.

Strengthen your skin by choosing moisturizers that contain Vitamin A and Vitamin E.

Wear lots of warm clothes, as well as gloves, scarves, and hats in the winter to prevent chapped skin and loss of moisture.
If you experience difficulty in selecting an appropriate moisturizer for your skin, consult your healthcare provider or a beautician for educated suggestions. If you know your skin type, choose a product created especially for you!

Law of Attraction Tip - Why Trying to Think Positive Frustrates Your Manifestation Efforts

Posted By Derrick Walker on July 29, 2008

Today, millions are people are talking about the Law of Attraction, “The Secret”, and how they can create what they want. Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion about how it all works.

One common complaint I hear is that people are thinking and being positive but aren’t seeing the results. Probing more into what they are doing, they share with me that they are doing *everything* they can to think positive BUT what I discover is that they’re ignoring how they really feel.

It’s unfortunate that people believe they can have what they want by thinking positive, putting on a happy face, focusing on what they want but completely ignoring their emotions and body signals.

It doesn’t work this way.

Because of the Law of Attraction, the Universe responds to our whole being. We are made up of energy that vibrates at a specific frequency. Everything we do, feel, think, etc. also vibrates with energy and this energy surrounds us. As we move through our lives, we are walking advertisements and the Universe constantly reflects back the energy we’re vibrating. It’s always a perfect match. It works in the same way tuning forks work. If you strike a tuning fork, another tuning fork of the same note will also vibrate even if it’s across the room.

So, when you are thinking positive but are also feeling worried, fear or doubt, the Universe picks up on all your vibrational signals and feeds back to you an experience of a similar vibration. Usually what happens is that your ‘negative’ emotions cancel out your positive thinking and you experience this as feeling stuck. No energy is moving. Sometimes your ‘negative’ emotions are stronger in frequency (they’re more frequent) than your positive thinking and you attract more thoughts, emotions and experiences that help you feel more fear, worried, and doubtful. This can create spiraling-out-of-control feelings.

The Law of Attraction does not discriminate. It always reflects back the energy you’re holding. Therefore it is vital that you always ‘clean up’ your vibrations so that you attract exactly what you want.

Here is a simple 4-step process to help you get clearer on what you want and therefore ’send out’ a clearer signal to the Universe.

STEP 1: Write down your goal - what you want to have (i.e. new TV, a loving partner, a new house, etc.)

STEP 2: In relation to your goal, from Step 1, list all the things you don’t want.

In this step you’re uncovering what you don’t want to have happen, what you don’t want to feel, and the reasons why you can’t have what you want. These are what I call the ‘Yeah-Buts’. When they come up, you feel negative emotions, which negate your positive energy. So it’s best to point them out now so they don’t get in the way later.

STEP 3: Now write down what you do want. I often look at each statement from my “don’t want” list and rewrite it positively.

STEP 4: Take each item on your “Do Want” list and ask yourself why you want it. How would you feel if you had each list item? Would you feel happy? Loved? Appreciated? Valued?

When you connect with how you would feel, you are essentially getting in touch with why you want something. And, as you take this time to write down your feelings, you’re actually becoming a vibrational match to your desires. You’re magnetizing your desires to you because the Universe is constantly feeding back to you what you put out, moment by moment, per the Law of Attraction. The more time you spend in this feeling place, the easier it will be to manifest what you want.

In closing, I highly recommend doing this 4-step process often. I feel that it helps us get in touch with that part of ourselves that we often ignore and discredit, yet often has the biggest impact in our manifestation efforts. We effectively create what we want through the Law of Attraction when we use our whole being instead of just our minds.

Read to know the darker side of the fad diets

Posted By Derrick Walker on July 25, 2008

By Joel Riley

I have a friend who is overweight and she has tried every diet plan there is; most of those being fad diets. The fact is, the people who create these so called miracle diets don’t really care if you lose weight or not or if the diet plan destroys your health; all they care about is getting your money. Individuals need to research and check with their doctors if the diet plan they have chosen is right for them.

Doctors have been airing their opposing views to these fad diets because of their negative impact on a person health. Though diets like Atkins diet and cabbage soups can reduce a person weight drastically, health wise it might not be advisable. Routine like skipping meals can have negative implications when it causes you to eat more per meal than having a balanced diet three meals per day. Also exercises are important. An obese person who exercises can in fact be healthier than a skinny person who doesn’t.

There is a misconception about carbohydrates; they don’t make you gain weight. Carbs are the fuel for your body and is essential for energy. Many fad diets will eliminate carbohydrates from your diet, which can lead to dangerous consequences. A person needs to measure their BMI (Body Mass Index) to find out if indeed they really do need to lose weight or if they just think they do. Fad diets feed on what society thinks is “the perfect body” and thus many people think they need to shed some pounds when actually all they need to do is exercise and tone up. Granted, it is imperative to lose some weight if your doctor deems you overweight or even obese, as carrying that extra weight can lead to heart problems as well as diabetes and hypertension. In the case of being overweight or obese you should certainly consult your doctor and let him or her put you on the appropriate diet that is suited for you and don’t just take it upon yourself to try a fad diet that is not guaranteed to work or have lasting results.

Any food can be eaten even if you are on a diet. Reducing weight is all about having balanced food and calculating your calories intake properly. A human body is not designed to be on a fat-free schedule for days. All you need to be aware of is the amount of calorie intake in a meal. The fad diets encourage restriction on certain food items which is not wise to do. Eat a balanced meal and break a meal into three or four parts to increase the number of meals.

A little change in the lifestyle can add to big results. Exercise should be mandatory when you are planning to lose some weight. It should be included in your daily routine even otherwise which will ensure that the weight is not regained. Instead of choosing a fad diet which chooses food for you, you choose your food yourself and be more aware of your system and calorie intake. A calorie is a calorie taken in any form at any time; you need to just plan it in a way that it falls to your benefit. Take more healthy food than a spicy acidic meal which will take more time to digest.
